Mets Police 80’s Week: Seaver wins his 300th game (scorecard!)

Dan was the original author on this one.

As mentioned in the comments for the 1985 Seaver Magazine covers, I was at Seaver’s 300th career win at Yankee stadium on August 4th, 1985 (as was Osh41 though we wouldn’t know each other for several more years).

The Yankees had scheduled Phil Rizzuto Day for that game – and had a special edition of Yankees Magazine available:

Prior to the game the Yankees honored Rizzuto, including presenting him with a “Holy Cow” – which proceeded to knock Scooter to the ground.  During the ceremony, Seaver walked across the field from the bullpen to the dugout at which point the crowd (heavily dominated by Mets fans) started cheering.  Sadly Rizzuto thought the cheering was for him and started thanking the crowd.

By this point I was keeping score at most games I attended – and certainly wanted to capture this game.  Dave Winfield was featured on the cover (0 for 4 on the day with 1 K).  (Interestingly, my scoring style has not changed too much in the last 26 years)

Looking back, 4 Hall of Famers played in that game – Seaver, Fisk, Winfield, and Henderson.

  1. A reprint of my Seaver 300th win story:

I was at Seaver’s 300th win at Yankee Stadium. Some interesting things to say about the day…

    1) It was Phil Rizzuto Day…the famous one where he was knocked down by a “Holy Cow”
    2) Before the game, I caught a BP ball after it had stopped rolling down a right field corridor…my father, cigarette dangling in mouth, yelled “Stevie got ball”
    3) During Rizzutto’s ceremony, Seaver warmed up very conspicuously on the field, not the bullpen for some of his warmup…I thought he was upstaging Phil a bit (years later they became broadcast partners)
    4) I remember watching out of town scores as second year player Dwight something beat the Cubs to go 17-3.
    5) A looming player walkout threatened all of baseball…they did walk out two days later, but came back after one day, with the Mets one half up on St.Loius.
    6) With Met fans rooting for Seaver, Yankee fans became enraged…multiple brawls in the stands practically cleared out RF by the foul pole.

  2. I was at that game in Chicago watching Doc pitch ! Was definately keeping my eyes on the Yanks score that day !!
