Why it’s Mets Pyrotechnics night and not Fireworks night

Ah..thanks to the Daily News for reminding me to write about this.  I have been meaning to do so all week.

So you’re probably wondering why the Mets are having “Pyrotechnics” night as opposed to “fireworks” and defaulted into “the Mets are stupid” mode like jerks like me tend to do.

Well, turns out there is a difference..

the team’s annual fireworks night – endangered when the club moved to Citi Field – has been revived with a unique pyrotechnics display set to light up Queens Friday.

Mets brass scrambled to save the popular pastime after realizing that launching fireworks beyond the center field fence is impossible at Citi Field because it’s too close to chop shops and junkyards.

The team tested pyrotechnics, which don’t go as high but can be exploded in the stadium, after a game last season.

If the second Pyrotechnics Night goes well after today’s Mets-Philadelphia Phillies game, the team has pledged to establish a new annual rite.

  1. I’m still thinking stupid Mets. You take one of your money makers that used to be guaranteed close to a sell out and put it in jeopardy because of poor planning? That’s once again bad business.

    1. Yes, obviously the Mets should’ve played three seasons in Yankee Stadium so they could knock down Shea early and have Citi Field facing a parking lot.

  2. It honestly seems like no thought whatsoever was put into citi field…shake shack with no view for 3 innings…dodger stadium east…fireworks…obstructed views galore… i guess when you spend hundreds of millions you don’t get much for it these days.

  3. Just buy the junkyards and close them down…problem solved…oh I forgot, the Mets have no money now.

I know how to save some money:

    1) Cancel pyrotechnics night…make it banner night
    2) Get rid of the black…it will make all the jerseys cheaper to make.

  4. So Ceetar, how much thought do you think they gave to Pyrotechnics night when building Citi? My guess is 0 until they went to plan the date after the stadium was built and realized it couldn’t happen. You can mockingly say play in Yankee stadium, but im truthfully saying actually plan things out which they didn’t seem to do with much involving the organization. You treat it (and the fans) like a cash cow and this is where we are today.

    1. There was no way to plan it. Automatically assuming they must have screwed it up and not thought about it is just cruel really. Sure it’s possible, but you don’t think when they made out the promotional calendar in 2006 without it, and 2007, and 2008 no one thought “Gee, wonder how this will work in Citi Field?”

And it’s not like they can just ‘buy’ the chop shops. they’re not for sale. The city is working on it, via eminent domain, but it’s not even going to be cleared enough to have an All-Star Village out there for the 2013 All-Star Game.

  5. I wouldn’t want the chop shops taken via eminent domain, that’s for sure. Giving the land to basically benefit the Mets (or any sports team for that matter…Brooklyn Nets) is an embarrassment to society.

Is it really cruel to assume they didnt think this thing through? I mean seriously, with all the mistakes (I do consider this a small one), one would have to assume the person in charge didn’t really care so long as they were gonna get a sweetheart deal of a stadium.

  6. The pyrotechnics were not nearly as good as fireworks. The ones going off on top of the stadium were pretty decent, but the ones on the field were small and lame. I wouldn’t go out of my way to attend a pyrotechnics night again.
