City must reject plan for mall at Willets Point • TimesLedger

Interesting opinion.

Citi Field and its parking areas are on Flushing Meadows Corona Park land. Again, the Mets claim that, by virtue of its lease, it can ignore the fact that a change from a parking lot on park property to a mall can be ignored and that it is not required to replace parkland taken for a mall.

  1. Not only does this piece kinda make me want to hate the Mets, the plan itself borders on the absurd. Citi Field will become an absolute nightmare to get to. This will dissuade people from coming to the stadium, not entice them.

And on a side note — admittedly of little importance to anyone but Mets diehards, but I’d imagine that’s the vast majority of people who come here — I highly doubt there would be markings at the mall to designate where Shea Stadium home plate, pitcher’s mound, etc., all were. The burying of them under an utterly unnecessary shopping mall would be very sad.
