Good morning, from time to time I joke about the elusive “statue technology” which has inspired this morning’s guest post.
Shannon,
OK, for the past couple of days I’ve been giving this some thought. With the Mets moving the “Real” Apple back onto the open, I think now is the time to start a serious full court press to get some of that new technology (a three-dimensional representation usually of a person, animal, or mythical being that is produced by sculpturing, modeling, or casting) erected out front to really make Citi Field the Mets’ house & home.
I know you clearly desire to see “The Franchise” cast in metal. My thoughts have drifted to groups, rather than individuals. Baseball is a team effort after all.
One concept, I mentioned it the other day in one of the postings on the Apple’s move out front (I believe the one with the photo-shopped apple), the I coined the “Mound Visit”, depicting Seaver and Hodges. Further thought made me realize that adding Grote would be very fitting too.
Then I thought of a two separate sculptures scenario:
1. “Mound Visit” with Seaver, Grote, Kranepool, and possibly Harrelson. A very believable event, and all major parts of Mets history (Seaver, any question? Â Grote, where would have all those great young pitcher have been without him? Kranepool, come on, the only lifelong Met)
2. “Managing the Game” with Stengel, Hodges, and Johnson. Casey sitting on a section of bench, and Gil & Davey standing on either side of the dugout steps. All three in correct period pinstripes (Casey ’62, Gil ’69, Davey ’86). And, there would be the ability to add the naxt great manger to bring the Mets to the promised land) And can you imagine the Yankee fans screaming about Casey sitting in front of Citi Field…lol
What do you think?

I definitely love Mound Visit, although we’d be honoring a pitcher either tiring or getting knocked out. Â Maybe Seaver just had a cramp or Gil wants to talk strategy. Â I have a tougher time picturing the managers…I don’t suppose it would be PC to have Davey sneaking a cigarette.
Also, in “Managing the Game” I’d have Bobby V. with his tape mustache and glasses after he’d been booted from the game. And, if money is no option (and I realize that I’m going to catch grief from those who only want to see the Mets and not “those other National League teams that abandoned New York for the West Coast”), perhaps depict John McGraw and Leo Durocher in with the other Managers as well as adding depictions of Willie Mays (whether you put him in a Mets uniform or Giants uniform doesn’t matter, when Willie played he was always considered “New York”), as well as lesser depictions of Bill Terry, Mel Ott, Carl Hubbell, Christy Mathewson, Duke Snider, Roy Campanella, Pee Wee Reese and Zack Wheat somewhere.
@michael i think in terms of the Metsiverse, Leo would be a hard sell because of the 1969 Cubs. Then again, look up who made the last out of the 1969 series.
Hey, I think the Cubs collapse in 1969 that allowed the Mets to win the division and go to the World Series are positives for the Mets. Also, Leo’s in the HOF as a Brooklyn Dodger and, of course, he managed both New York NL teams (being instrumental in influencing a young Willie Mays while with the Giants).
I think statues should only be put up as a memorial after a person has passed on. I think its strange that there are a few teams that have statues of living players.
@corey i never understood that logic. Let’s treasure Seaver while he’s here.
I love the mound visit idea, but why not have Hodges, Seaver, and Piazza? (assuming Mike’s number will be retired sooner rather than later–which in turn may nudge the powers that be in Cooperstown in the right direction in regards to which cap he should wear).
That only leaves out Casey…
one step at a time I suppose.
Just a pose of Seaver in midst of throwing a pitch for a statue. Just not sure where it would go. Too many flower planters in front of stadium.
In the parking lot I think a cool idea would be near the shea mound marker, the pose of Orosco after ending ’86 WS. Then where Cleon Jones caught final out of ’69 WS, a statue of Jones in that pose when he catches Davey Johnson’s final out. Of course they would have be some sort of barrier around them so no cars hit them.
I think if you dont like this idea, you cant be that fond of Mets history.
How about this idea. Where the home Shea dugout was, re created it in parking lot.
You can have Hodges, Stengal, Davey in popular poses. Then have fun with it too. Have Bobby V with fake mustashe on bench and even Keith sneaking a smoke and so one with a hot foot.
