On the Black says retire #7

And not for Jose Reyes but for Ed Kranepool.

I can’t roll with you on this one guys.  I know he’s up there on the leaderboard but I use the “my eyes” test on these things and the Krane…well, no way and double no way before 16, 17, 18, 31, and 36.

On The Black’s case.

7 very well get retired some day, depending on Sandy’s mood around July 31, 2011.

Make our own Mets 2011 Old Timers Day: Catcher

Premise:  invite three living retired players to a hypothetical Old Timer’s Day.

This one is a little tough if I’m only going to invite three catchers.

Under the rules of our game we can only invite three. So I will invite…

Jerry Grote, John Stearns, and Todd Hundley.

Yeah I know who I left off.   There’s like 6 more guys who should be invited including Ed Hearn, Todd Pratt, Ron Hodges, Paul LoDuca and those two other guys.

I never realized how many likeable Mets catchers there have been. Who are your three?

Jerry Koosman, Mets Fantasy Camp 1990

Charles says:

When I went to Fantasy Camp in Port St Lucie in 1990, Jerry Koosman was one of the ‘old-timers’ there. I have a pic w him that I will send later. Can’t believe I was ever that skinny.

Anyway, one night I went to dinner w some other campers, Koosman, and Wayne Garrett. He relayed a story to me directly that in 1969, he went to camp after a terrific first season when he finished 2d in the rookie of the year balloting to Johnny Bench in the closest voting in history, 10 1/2 to 9 1/2. When he was presented with his new contract, his salary had been doubled–from $6,000 to $12,000!!

True story.

This was February 1990 in Port St Lucie. They housed us in the minor league clubhouse by the back fields. There were over 100 of us there that week. Amazingly, I ran into one guy this season in the Delta Club…

Keep this stuff coming folks…it’s a long way until March 1st.   [email protected]

Mets Police Flashback: Citi Field with blue fences

This one always strikes a chord with the Mets fans.  As it stands now there is no technology known to man that would allow the fences at Citi Field to be blue.  It would also reportedly clash with the green.  Also, the blue caps and pinstriped uniforms in this video don’t look better than the black.  Glory be to the hypnotoad.

From February 2010:

Jesse sent this to me, a magical alternate world where David Howard has found a paint company that sells blue, and the Mets wear pinstriped jerseys at home.  Of all the “shut up the fans” moves the Mets could do, this one seems so so easy. Enjoy.

Make our own Mets 2011 Old Timers Day: Shortstop

Next year is the 50th season of Mets baseball – a great excuse to bring back Old Timers Day even though they won’t and nobody showed up for 1986 Day.

I started this in the summer but then got sidetracked by whatever Mets crisis happened.  It’s a slow week so here’s a window of opportunity.

The premise is that you get to invite three living retired Mets players at each position.

I will invite Buddy Harrelson, Rafael Santana and random Met Bob Bailor.

Who would you like to see?  Invite three.
