Most popular articles on Mets Police (February 21)

Fred thinks the family will own the team for generations:  what else is he going to say?  If he says that he plans to bring on a business partner there’s a media and blogger shark frenzy.  If he says he plans to sell to some investors from Mercury in about 10 years there’s a shark frenzy.   Plus, if you owned a baseball team wouldn’t you want your children to keep owning it?

I think Brian Costa in the Ledger rocks it out.   Make sure he’s on the list of people you regularly check out.  Worth a follow on twitter too. (and I’m @metspolice)   Brian has the audio of Fred Wilpon from Saturday.

I bought my kid some 2010 Topps which has me on a baseball card kick.  If you’d like to share some photos of your Mets baseball cards email me [email protected]   The more random the better.

I’m not nuts about the idea of Wright putting on muscle. That never seems to end well with players.  Looking at the picture I’m just going to say, “interesting” and move on to the week’s most popular articles:

Speculation: no Opening Day ticket lottery this year?

Check out the new injury Prevention and Recovery logo the Mets are using.

These retro blue Mets jerseys are cool.

I thought what the Cubs pulled was pretty scummy.

Luis Castillo’s baseball card is pretty funny.

The Mets have quietly admitted there are obstructed views. Dave Howard, where’s my apology?

The Cyclones have a great jersey promotion for Wally Backman.

Fun stuff: Afterlife Shea Stadium was the home of the Puppy Bowl and Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel and now the home of the New Orleans Saints

The Mets added 6-game packs. Info here and here.

This regularly gets clicked: It might make financial sense, but it sure is annoying to think Bobby Bonilla will get $1 million a year from the Mets from 2011-2035.

David Wright understands the mission

I probably should have written this about 16 hours ago but I have some other interests besides the Mets (“job” and “daddy”) but better late than never.

I’m thrilled that finally someone other than me understands the mission and I am thrilled that the person is the future captain David Wright.

At some point Wilponspeak made it seem ok to play “meaningful games in September.”. Yeah that meaningful game 162 in ’07 and ’08 meant a lot. Who can ever forget the thrill of Tom Cylon Glavine’s final Mets appearance or the last game at Shea?

I hate to bring up certain other teams but the Yankees get it. Girardi is changing his uniform number to 28 to remind everyone of what the goal is. (I double dare Jerry to wear 3).

It makes me happy to her Wright talking about winning the World Series. Not a rebound, not make the playoffs. Win.

If all goes well, Wright will play his entire career here and we’ll finally have a Franchise who didn’t spend 6 years in Ohio.

So far DW has been on the quiet side, and one thing the recent teams have missed is that Hernandez/O’Neill/LoDuca type that will get in the face of teammates when they start slacking. I don’t know if Wright has that in his personality, but the quote was a good start.

Just like I challenged Reyes yesterday to put all aspects of his game together, it is time for David to lead. Hitting a quiet .300 isn’t enough. Time to win. You understand the mission, now go grab the other 24 guys by the neck and make Omar look like a genius.

Glad Reyes feels fine: time to put it all together

In my two years doing this I have ticked off some folks with my criticism of Jose Reyes. Basically, I see the tools you see but I don’t see a player who has put then all together to be a superstar.

That being said, I’m happy to hear he’s feeling fine. I’m cautious because the Mets training staff has taught me to fear. I worry Jose is one bad step away from 6 months on the DL and I don’t think I will ever shake that feeling.

As much as this blog can be about criticizing, I’m just a Mets fan like you who wants them to win the World Series (in nice uniforms). Hopefully this is the season Jose wins the MVP.

However I stand by what I’ve said in the past: through this point, Jimmy Rollins has been a better player. He doesn’t have the tools, but he has accomplished more with less. Take your Phillies rage away for a second: who would you rather have, Kent or Backman? Jefferies or Backman? Mookie or Bonilla? Sometimes raw talent isn’t everything.

You can show me all the studies you want about Citi Field but ideally someone is telling Reyes not to try to match his 19 homers from 2006. .300 and lots of steals would go a long way (thanks Captain Obvious).

Finally, winning does make a difference. Buddy Harrelson was loved in this town and it wasn’t because of numbers.

The talent is there, time to put it all together and lead this team to a ring.

The Mets hold an option for 2011 for $11 million.
