Another teaser about tomorrow’s Mets Uni Watch

I’m really looking forward to tomorrow’s Uni Watch (ESPN version of the column, not the Uni Watch Blog version which you should read every day anyway) which has something to do with the Mets and black uniforms.

I prodded Paul for a teaser and he teases with..

It will provide the full backstory to the black story.

Oooh…and it will hit the Mets news cycle after a day game (or rainout) which means it will have lots of daylight.   Cant wait!

Are Mets fans worst in sports?

NYBD has an interesting premise following Josh Thole’s desicision to get off twitter because it was too negative.

I said a couple of weeks ago Mets fans are fast becoming the worst in all of sports. They thrive on anger, negativity, and playing the victim. Maybe the Josh Thole “Twitter-gate” is just a small sample of idiots. Does anyone really know the percentage of baseball fans that are represented on Twitter? Regardless, having spent time around the ballpark, talking to individuals around the team, and interacting with fans I can attest to the fact the behavior towards Thole is not just a small Twitter sample. It’s a burgeoning new attitude by Mets fan that threatens to destroy what once was a great fan base.

I said it a couple of weeks ago, I will say it again. Mets fans it’s time for an intervention. You are a disgrace, a joke, and perhaps it’s time we traded a majority of you somewhere for a player to be named later. If only we could delete many of you, just like Thole did to his Twitter.

I disagree with Mike.  The sports culture has gotten more negative in general, and part of that is because of the technology whether it’s flaming someone on a message board, twitter, or a fat guy complaining about uniforms day after day after day.

Personally, I may not be the most positive fellow, and this blog was born of frustration with the direction of the franchise…but I do try to spotlight the positive and definitely try to encourage positive behavior among fans.

The Mets fans I talk to are passionate but not haters.  Frustrated but not wishing illnesses on people.

Anyway, very interesting read.

Times: Charlie Samuels expected to be arrested today

I hate linking to this kind of negative stuff but here’s some news.

New York City police and prosecutors are expected to announce the arrest of former Mets clubhouse manager Charlie Samuels on Wednesday in a case that saw a gambling investigation mushroom into an inquiry centered on sports memorabilia, including a full set of autographed 1986 World Series uniforms, according to people briefed on the case.

Mets increase inWABU to .700

With the help of @formerdirtdart (by help I mean he does all the work) the Mets Police have brought “advanced” uniform statistics to the blog. By “advanced” I mean you make something up and hope to shoehorn a catchy acronym on it such as WABU (wins after black uniforms).

From the @formerdirtdart sports bureau:

UPDATED 12:15 AM 11 May 2011

Mets’ WABU .400 (2-3) -4 DIFF (run differential)

Mets’ inWABU (inclusive Wins after Black Uniforms) .700 (7-3) +12 DIFF

[inWABU includes all post black jersey games, even if black jersey still worn]

By analyzing advanced uniform statistics the Mets can expect a 40% chance of winning in gray today, with a greatly increased chance of winning if they wear black again (after wearing black, aka inWABU) and a 5% chance of winning if today’s lineup includes names like Hu and Harris.

The FDDSB will also continue to track HATE percentages (hybrids as opposed to tradition every day) as the season progresses.

As proven by Terry Collins during the win streak last month, advanced uniform statistics are the primary factor in whether a team wins. Other lesser considerations include whether or not Jason Bay plays, if Troy Tulowitzki is on the other team, if your ace is a mental case, the number of doubleheaders played in the last 36 hours, or if a player whose last name starts with H is in your starting lineup (Hu, Harris, Hairston).

News’ Bill Gallo dies at 88

Daily News columnist Bill Gallo passed away at the age of 88.

For those of us who grew up in an age of newspapers (before ipads, twitter, blogs, AOL, WFAN, sportsphone..) the News was where you got your sports, and Gallo’s cartoons were the spot that captured the zeitgeist. It’s all so splintered and different now…but if you’re over 40 I bet you are a little sadder than you were this time yesterday.

Thanks for all the great work Bill.
