I watched the All Star Game until 10pm

I used to LOVE the All Star Game.  In my DVD Closet I have every game from like 1993-2013 on VHS, then DVD-R, and some thumb drives with digital files.  I decided to stop after the Citi Field game as it was becoming a “thing.”  I had it in my mind I was going to go back some day and watch all these old players from my youth but that day hasn’t come yet.

I don’t watch much baseball these days, its a slog of a sport run by wanna be Casino Magnates who market players who are jerks to the fans…all kind of a turnoff.  So as a semi-casual here’s some thoughts.

I LIKED the pregame festivities.  I knew people were going to HATE it, and they did, but look its Atlanta and baseball has already lost the “me” crowd (Bill Simmons being an example), the younger millennials, and Gen-Z – so they have to try to do something to get people interested.  More importantly it was fun, so good job.

Joe Davis is fine and all but it might forever seem like Joe Buck is on vacation and Davis is just filling in.  He’s like a half-step short of feeling BIG GAME.

The uniforms – jeez MLB is good at not getting things right.  yes they wore the correct tops and bottoms. but MLB had to mess with the caps.  At least now we know that an orange brim cap looks lousy with the traditional Mets pinstripes.  Note the cap I used as the stager image for this post is NOT the one they wore in the game.  In olden times I would have done a bunch of screen grabs but its just not worth my time any more – as I have shared previously, the changes to Twitter have really stopped the circulation of posts (can’t even easily auto-post any more) which cuts down traffic…and people don’t really go to websites any more (well apparently YOU do but many people don’t) so my motivation is down….plus I barely watch baseball these days.  The ;last time I watched a game was during that Phillies weekend, or maybe the Monday after.

Speaking of which – the best way to follow baseball now is an Apple Watch.  Select your favorite team (say, the Mets) on the default Apple Sports App and just watch the play by play come to your phone.  No commercials.  No Gary Cohen running one of the best Mets of all time out of town.  No Gelbs.  It’s great.

It was fun to root against Lindor.  I don’t root against Mets, but I will root against people on the NL All Star Team.  Also, I countinue to hope he gets jury duty and misses significant time.

The game started after 8:25pm eastern.  Baseball loves catering to the West Coast Fan.  How’s that working out?  I turned it off at 10pm.

I woke up to learn that the game was settled by some version of Home Run Derby?  What are we even doing?   I’m sure this will get rave reviews and it will be what happens in the regular season within 10 years.

Went to Citi Field and….it needs some work

I know a guy who used to work at Yankee Stadium and he has repeatedly told me George Steinbrenner would walk around and check on things and be like – Hey Joe, how’s that hot dog.

I thought of that last night when I looked up at Soda Corner and one of the lights was out.  Now maybe the light went out at 7pm and they didn’t have a chance to fix it during the Lumineers show…but it just looks sloppy.

Like the LF retired numbers.  It just looks sloppy that a bunch of them are faded.

Walking in, I noticed the bricks.  Remember when everyone paid a few hundred bucks to honor their loved ones and line the WIlpons pockets?  Those are all pretty beat up and faded.  It’s the sort of a thing a billionaire (whose been known to write pretty big checks for things) could just be cool about to restore, but he isn’t going to do that, is he?

I was talking about the billionaire with a friend over dinner.  The friend agreed with my theory, which I will float here so I can say Told Ya So.  The theory is that when the casino gets declined, the billionaire loses interest in baseball and sells the team.  It will be spun as we bought a $2B asset and sold it for $4B  what a great investment.

Anyway, it’s the little things.  Fix the Soda Sign.  Paint the numbers.  Restore the bricks.

What is Mrs. Met even doing on social media?

The Mets social media used to be on point, but in 2025 I am finding it to be really really stupid.

The Mrs. Met account has started tweeting inane things, as if its being run by and targeted at 7 year olds with their first phone.

What’s even the point of this crap?  At least the stuff of the main account is monetized.
