Mets Game Notes for April 20, 2021 vs. Cubs

Mets pitchers have struck out 107 in 89.1 innings this season which equates to a 10.78 strikeout per nine ratio…The team’s 10.78 mark is the third-best in the majors and second best in the NL… The team has walked only 22 this season, giving them a 2.22 walks per nine inning ratio, the best in the majors…Jacob deGrom is third in the the NL with 35 punchouts.   What the Mets don’t realize is that makes for boring television.   What I wouldn’t give for a “Whitey Herzog inning”

As a staff, the Mets own a 2.92 ERA (29 earned runs/89.1 innings) with 22 walks, 107 strikeouts and a .220 opponents batting average…That ERA ranks fifth in the majors and in the NL.  What the Mets don’t realize is that makes for boring television.

Dominic Smith is batting .293/.357/.558 with 64 runs, 32 doubles, a triple, 23 homers, 73 RBI, 35 walks and a .915 OPS in 150 games since the start of the 2019 season…This includes a .292/.375/.506 slash line against fellow southpaws and a .293/.352/.573 mark against right-handers.  However he was not allowed to start on Opening Day because reasons.

How bad is Peter K. Alonso, so bad that we have to go to 2019 to find something to put in the game notes, said the Mets probably.

Vulgar Pete has four home runs in seven games against the Cubs and bashed three homers in the Mets’ four-game set at Wrigley Field in 2019.  Now granted he didn’t play in Wrigley Field in 2020 but he was awful all season except once the Mets were eliminated at which point he was awesome!

Pete has two home runs, it is April 20th.

Taijuan Walker, my favorite Met, gets the start because he knows to change TO Mets Culture, not try to change the Mets culture – unlike Vulgar Pete and The Big Zero.

8 Nimmo
6 Lindor
7 Dom
3 Peter K. Alonso
9 Conforto
4 Jeff
5 JD
2 McCann

April Mets in 1st? Comedians return…Jerry Seinfeld on Mets, Yankees, DH

It’s an annual rite of passage.  The Mets are in first place in April, so we hear from the comedians.  Someone get Jim Breuer up in the bullpen.

Jerry Seinfeld the person must be like Jerry Seinfeld The Character in that he’s stuck in the 1990s because for some reason he went on Sports Radio.

That’s what Jerry Seinfeld was wondering Monday during an appearance on WFAN as he took in baseball’s bizarro standings that have the New York Mets in first place in the National League East and the Yankees in last place in the American League East.

In between the many commercials, Jerry said

“It’s not so easy to win. If it was a matter of money, the Yankees wouldn’t be 5-10, so never underestimate the number of elements. But I’m really enjoying the Yankees fan base suddenly finding themselves in an unfamiliar and uncomfortable spot in the New York baseball hierarchy … being 5-10 really upset them! As Mets fans, when things aren’t going well, we’re fine, we’re used to it! But the Yankees fan isn’t used to tough times.”

“I love Yankees fans, and I always say that I have no problem with the proud, boastful Yankees fan, even the arrogant Yankees fan. The only Yankees fan I cannot bear is the moist Yankees fan – the wet-eyed, teary Yankee fan, who gets moist when they talk about the greatness!”

“The universal DH makes me want to vomit in the street, but the extra-innings rule really makes me sick,  So the game is over earlier. Who wants less baseball? Not me! I want 18 inning games. It’s disgusting.”

“The most valued thing in baseball is a man on base – you work for that. You’re just going to whore that out and put a guy on second in the 10th, just give that up?” I get the tiebreaker in tennis, but you think fans will flock to the game because it’s 10 minutes shorter? No one gives a damn. The only adjustment I’m in favor of is batters stepping out of the box. I’d be in favor of rules that change that behavior.”

Mets Cheetah Cap

What is this, off-season filler? Well yeah Man, the Mets never actually play baseball. They are off today because they are tired from playing two days in a row and had to sit on a chartered plane for 3.5 hours and definitely will stay in today and rest and not take advantage of all Chicago has to offer.

So yeah, Mets cheetah cap.

Mets Game Notes for April 18, 2021

My 26th favorite Met The Big Zero starts today, hopefully the Mets come back from 11-0 after one inning to win 12-11!

Dominic Smith is batting .296/.360/.564 with 64 runs, 32 doubles, a triple, 23 homers, 73 RBI, 35 walks and a .924 OPS in 149 games since the start of the 2019 season…This includes a .292/.375/.506 slash line against fellow southpaws and a .297/.356/.581 mark against right-handers…..and yet he does not play every day for some reason.

Peter K. Alonso Drove in a pair of runs in the Mets’ game one win in a doubleheader at Coors Field on Apri l17…Is a lifetime .444/.500/1.000 hitter in Colorado.  Unfortunately he does not play for the Rockies and the game notes ignore yesterdays not one, not two, not three, not four but FIVE strikeouts.  He now has 15 on the season in ten games which is kind of impressive.

In game one yesterday, the Mets struck out 17 of the 26 batters they faced, a 65.4 percentage… It was the highest single-game percentage in Mets history…Yesterday marked the fourth time in franchise history that the Mets struck out 17 or more batters in a game that was 9.0 innings or less…Their franchise record is 19, which has been done twice before: October 6, 1991 at Philadelphia and April 22, 1970 vs. San Diego.

What the above ignores is how little the ball is being put in play which is why baseball is boring.

Nimmo has reached base in 23 straight games dating back to September 11 last season…He is batting .407 (33-81) with 12 runs, five doubles, a triple, two home runs, 10 RBI, 15 walks, a .505 OBP and a 1.073 OPS in that span…It is the second-longest active streak in the majors, behind only Mike Trout’s 32-game streak…whoever Mike Trout is….It is the third-longest streak in Nimmo’s career.

Francisco Lindor is one steal away from 100 for his career…so when Gary Cohen rattles that off you know where he got it form….He is eight doubles away from 200 and 97 hits away from 1,000…Dominic Smith is one double away from 50 for his career…Michael Conforto is six RBI away from 350.

Mets’ Pete Alonso has struck out 15 times in 41 Plate Appearances

Pete Alonso, strike three.

Do you guys REALLY find this acceptable?  I know the home run every 6 days is really exciting and stuff, but what about the 30 ABs in between?

Peter K. Alonso is batting .222 which sucks but you millennials don’t care about batting average, you guys are all about OPS which is where we add two numbers together to try and make a big number, which in Pete’s case, we fail at.

Pete’s OPS is .737 which makes him the 93rd best hitter in MLB!  Pete is almost Migel  Rojas good (.742).  He’s within earshot of being Bryan Reynold good (.769!) and with some look he could be Tommy Edman good (.776)!!!

As for the Ks, after tacking on 5 more yesterday, Pete has struck out 15 times in 41 Plate Appearances in 10 games.   15 in 10 games.    That paces for 243 Ks, but he’s on pace for 32 HRs.

I dunno boys….you can almost hear the boos coming.
