Don’t Break Jake: Mets game notes for April 17, 2021

INF J.D. Davis has been activated from the 10-Day Injured List. INF José Peraza has been optioned to the alternate site. LHP Stephen Tarpley will be the team’s 27th man today. RHP Franklyn Kilome has cleared waivers and has been outrighted to the Alternate Site.

The Mets continue to try their hardest to break Jacob deGrom.  After letting him throw 100mph in March, of which nothing good ever comes, today they will pitch him in really cold weather, of which nothing good ever comes.

In the nightcap, Joey Lucchesi, who is the Mets 5th starter because Steve is cheap, will make his first start with the Mets…He made his Mets debut out of the bullpen on April 7 at Philadelphia, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings, striking out three and surrendering only one hit.

Lucchesi gained fame for a pitch he calls a “churve”… He holds it deep in his palm like a classic circle changeup, and for most of his college career, that’s all it was – a basic changeup…Early in his pro career, he began tinkering with his wrist action as he threw it, snapping off the pitch like a breaking ball…It soon became his go-to putaway weapon…The pitch generated a 48 percent whiff rate in 2020 and a whiff rate of at least 37 percent in all three of his big league seasons.  In other words, we’re just making crap up now to pretend he’s good.

Pronounces his last name loo-KAY-see…His nickname is Joey Fuego…Trying to scheme up a creative Twitter handle while at Southeast Missouri State, Lucchesi asked his college teammates for a nickname…One of them suggested “Fuego,” and years later, he still goes by the pseudonym… Gets a haircut the day before every start…When he arrives at a new mound, he prefers to spend time on the mound and visualize the start…He did it in college before every Friday night start…Also calls his father, Kenneth, before each start and the two talk through the next day’s game.

Dominic Smith is batting .298/.360/.568 with 64 runs, 32 doubles, a triple, 23 homers, 73 RBI, 33 walks and a .928 OPS in 147 games since the start of the 2019 season…This includes a .292/.375/.506 slash line against fellow southpaws and a .300/.355/.587 mark against right-handers.  But did the Mets let him play Opening Day? No.

Vulgar Pete continues to be terrible, although one imagines a week in Denver and Wrigley should help things.

Last Game: 0-3, RBI, K

Streak: 0 for last 3

RISP: .182 (2-11), 3 RBI

and he has ONE home run.

MLB should do Dodgers at Mets with throwbacks on Jackie Robinson Day 2022

Dear MLB,

As you know, April 15th 2022 will be the 75th anniversary of Jackie Robinson’s debut in MLB.

You also likely know that Citi Field is modeled after Ebbets Field where Jackie played.  You may also know about the Jackie Robinson Rotunda in the building.

Furthermore, you may know that the Dodgers played in New York City at the time.

Therefore, I propose to you that you schedule the Dodgers AT the Mets on that date.

Furthermore, I propose that we bend the rules and allow the Dodgers to wear white “home” uniforms with the B cap, and the Mets to wear “road” Giants uniforms….which will say N E W Y O R K and have the same NY on the cap they have now, so it won’t be awkward.  The Mets have previously worn New York Giants uniforms at home, so there is precedent.

only photo I had handy

I recall for the first Jackie Day that you had the Dodgers playin Queens, but they did not do the throwbacks.  I think this would be a nice extra step.

Thank you for your consideration.

The Ghost Of Tim Leary Warns The Mets about deGrom tonight

I’d say Mike Vaccaro saw my tweet about Tim Leary yesterday, but he blocked me years ago so I probably blocked him back – so this is just medium minds (his) thinking like great minds (mine).   Anyway, Mike is correct and like REALLY CORRECT when he writes

Keep the ball away from deGrom until Sunday. For his own good. And for the team’s. Look, the Mets were already prepared to play two of their games in Denver with uncertainty. One was already labeled “TBA.” One was going to be the starting debut of Joey Lucchesi, who may or may not require an opener.  (via NY Post)

And here’s the why.

Any Mets fan of a certain age — say, 48 or older — retains a horrifying memory of April 12, 1981, a Sunday in Chicago that reached a high of 38 degrees with winds whipping in from Lake Michigan. Tim Leary made his debut that day for the Mets. He was Dwight Gooden when Gooden was still a junior at Hillsborough High, a flame-throwing 22-year-old the Mets had deemed The Future.

Leary struck out the first two batters he faced that day at Wrigley Field, Ivan DeJesus and Joe Strain. He retired six of the seven men to face him, allowing only a walk to Ken Reitz. He fanned Bull Durham. He was electric. He walked off the mound after the second inning and sought out Joe Torre, the Mets’ manager.

“My arm hurts,” Leary said.

Then he disappeared for two years.

(via New York Post)

Unfortunately, the Mets never ever are smart and won’t heed Mike’s words….but they should.

Also remind you that I previously that the Mets were reckless letting JDG throw 100 in March.  I am still waiting for something bad to happen from that and praying I am wrong.

Matt Harvey pitched against the Mariners. How did he do? You’ll look.

Happy Harvey/Jackie Robinson Day.  #42 on his uniform and #33 in your hearts, #32 Matt Harvey was on the mound for the Orioles!

In the first, a 1-2-3 inning, even if Orioles fans are ignoring how far this out was.  I have warned Reds, Angels and Royals fans about these.  These don’t always stay in.

But hey fans are EXCITED.

And thanks to a home run – there tend to be lots of home runs in Camden Yards, but no reason to worry about that, and we’re on to the second with a 2-0 lead!

The Orioles announcers are telling us how Matt’s three whole days at the NJ performance camp fixed Matt and then SIT DOWN SON THE DARK KNIGHT IS BACK BABY

Strike three.

The next guy got a hit and now it’s the fun part where we watch Matt with RUNNERS ON BASE UH OH.

But don’t worry, The Read Deal is dealing and SIT DOWN SON.

And for the first time in….years?….we have HEAD UP MATT HARVEY walking confidently to the dugout!

Could a night out in Fells Point with some cuties be in the future?  On to the 1-2-3 3rd and you can start pouting out a Heavy Seas Double Cannon which is a force to be reckoned with….just like The Dark Knight!

(@ceetar says it is a Maryland based beer).

In the 4th….a HBP and a walk brings a mound visit…but TDK gets out of it AGAIN!

There’s two out in the 5th.  Matt is soooo close to a win and then Sam Haggerty singles.  And what did I tell the Orioles about men on base?

Wait for it….

Wait for it…

OH NO!

And that will be it for Matt Harvey….and now you know which apps I use and YES I HAVE 80 UNREAD TEXTS AND 2080 UNREAD EMAILS.

Matt Harvey said, “I’m pretty frustrated. I feel like that game should have been 2-0 and I should have been out there the whole game.”

Well yeah, but

Sorry Matt.  Maybe next time.

4 and two thirds.  2 runs both earned.  A walk, 3 Ks, and an ERA of 5.02
