Memorial Day and Eddie Grant

Had you read the New York Times on May 30th 1921 you’d have seen this

MEMORIAL UNVEILING TODAY; Eddie Grant Monument to Be Uncovered at Polo Grounds.

So now you’re asking – Who is Eddie Grant?

Well Grant played for a number of teams including the never-spoken-of New York Giants. Not ana amzing bplayer by any means. Eddie was killed during World War I in 1918.

In 1921 the Giants unveiled a plaque in Eddie’s memory, and there it stayed until the Giants last game in 1957.

It was uncovered recently and now is in the possession of these guys:

How about we put this plaque back in a baseball stadium. How about Dodg, I mean, Ebb…um Citi Field which as you know honors the Polo Grounds with green seats.

Thanks to contributor Louie Maz (no relation to Lee Maz) for the heads up on this one.

A Soccer Post?

This whole Red Bull New York vs LA Galaxy thing is never going to work. Soccer (Football please) needs to get super local. Brooklyn vs Nassau. Morris United vs Staten Island. You know, Bronx vs Queens.

Cyclones Fan suggested a bunch of local leagues, then some sort of champions tournament. Kind of like UEFA but just in the USA.

Good article here about watching the UEFA championships in the Chicago bars. If you saw the game or have ever hit the bars for some World Cup, it’s fun. It’s a hell of a better idea than the World Baseball Championship.

“Oh, they’ll come in, and the first thing we’ll have to do is separate the fans,” said Globe partner Stuart Johnston, who along with his buddy Jamie Hale, runs the spotless pub at 1934 W. Irving Park Rd.

“We’ll have two bars. One front and one back, and the fans of each team will sing songs at each other from bar to bar. It’s not just a big game. It’s the biggest game,” Johnston told me.

>Danica Will Beat You Up!

So Danica gets in a fender bender….and starts to walk over to start a fight with Ryan Briscoe’s team and security breaks it up. Hilarious.

Danica, come over to NASCAR. They’ll let you fight.

(I can only write about Willie Randolph so much)

>What Does Howie Know About Tomorrow?

Listening to Howie call the 9th inning – sure did sound like he thought he was calling Willie’s final inning.

Will it be Jerry Manuel or will it be Lee? All the newspapers had those at the top two – pretty funny because Lee wasn’t even mentioned until this jerk here started blogging.

Meanwhile on SI.com: SI learned that on the eve of the Subway Series, Mets COO Jeff Wilpon called together Randolph and GM Omar Minaya to impart this message: “You guys need to turn it around, and turn it around quickly.”

I’m predicting Jerry, and I’m predicting the fanbase will be even more ornery that under Willie.
