Klapisch: Gary ‘The Kid’ Carter wasn’t supposed to get sick

I know we’re all thinking of Gary Carter today.  I think this is the best of the articles in today’s papers…including more details about Gary’s illness.

Carter noticed how forgetful he’d been recently – lapses in memory that went beyond normal, middle-age fuzziness. The red flag, however, was the series of powerful headaches that never seemed to subside.

Two more screen grabs of the Mets stars and stripes cap

Media Goon set off a firestorm on Facebook earlier by calling these caps ugly. I think it’s OK if he didn’t like the cap, he can still love America and not like a cap, no?

As for me, I just wonder why they count be regular Mets blue rather than this shade. I guess it’s supposed to be flag blue? Is it?

I’d love to see the Mets take the field in the consumer-available S&S jerseys. I have one and I love it.

Mets Comment on Bin Laden News

Here are some reactions from the Mets Players after tonight’s game.

Terry Collins received the news of Osama bin Laden’s death in the dugout from bench coachKen Oberkfell.

“That’s certainly something bigger to celebrate than this, I can tell you that,” Collins said. “Obie came over to me and he said, ‘You know why they’re chanting?’ I said, ‘No,’ and he told me. It’s a big night. One of the guys [third base coach Chip Hale] said at the end of the game, ‘That’s as big a night as we’ll have in a long time. We got bin Laden and we won.’

“Obviously this is a big night for the United States. I wish we could have finished the game two hours ago and celebrated a little bit of it. We’ll take a nice ride home, take the day off and get ready for San Francisco. This is a good win for us, and obviously a huge win for America tonight.”

Beato said he focused on the game, but he had more of a direct connection to Sept. 11 than perhaps anyone in a Mets uniform on Sunday night. Beato had watched the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers from rooftop of Xaverian High School in Brooklyn.

When I was in high school, we got called into the auditorium,” said Beato, who had moved from the Dominican Republic to New York shortly before. “I thought it was like a routine thing. Five days into the school year my freshman year, I don’t know what’s going on. They called us in. They were talking about what happened, but I didn’t understand too well. Me and a friend of mine just went up to the roof of the building once we knew what it was. We saw the building just smoking from the roof.

Mets and Phillies Fans Unite

Last night in the top of the ninth inning, chants of USA,USA erupted from the stands of Citizens Bank BallPark in Philly. This chant broke due to the news of the death of Osama Bin Laden by US Special Forces in Pakistan.

From Adam Rubin over at Espn:
The “U-S-A, U-S-A” chants began at Citizens Bank Park in the ninth inning on Sunday night, as Daniel Murphy batted as a pinch-hitter against Philadelphia Phillies reliever Ryan Madson. The news spread and the pockets of chants continued, until the news had filtered throughout the place and it reached a crescendo later in the inning that Osama bin Laden had been killed by U.S. special forces.

I just want to thank all our  U.S. Armed Forces who are abroad keeping us safe. I also want to thank all our veterans for doing the same in the past for us. Thank you all.
