Show Your Stirrups!

Here’s a guest post from Stan…

Hey Shannon,

I was wondering, aside from the Mets needing to ditch any and all black from their uniforms is there any chance a movement can occur to eliminate the dopey down to the ankle pants?

Don’t you think it’s high time MLB issued a declaration to get rid of the over done, awful and out dated looking ankle pants? The only guy who ever looked cool in ankle length pants was George Hendrick….that’s it.

It’s a look and style I am completely fed up with seeing. It was already played out and stupid looking by the mid 90’s.

What do you think about a return to the stirrup styles of the 1970’s and 80’s? I’m sure you know what I’m talking about! Any chance they go back to the old style? The way they are supposed to be (I’m not talking the all solid color with no white sock showing either that some players seldom wear nowadays).

High stirrup, plenty of white sock showing ala Keith Hernandez and Don Sutton and those guys. Any thoughts?

Absolutely.   It’s such a better look.   What cracked me up is I did a quick google to make sure “stirrup” was the correct term, and this wiki entry says…

Baseball stirrups – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stirrups are uniform socks commonly worn by baseball players up until the mid-1990s, when major-league players began wearing their pants down to the ankles,

..which goes right with what you said.    Baseball somehow got past the horrible uniforms of the 1970’s (take a look at some of Cleveland’s or even the Giants), maybe someday the 1990’s uniforms will be looked at with similar derision…and yeah, show those socks!
