Should the Mets go political and wear Los Mets jerseys in Arizona?

I stand by my ground that I can’t stand the Los Mets jerseys.  Why?  They make no sense.  It would be like wearing jerseys that say “The Mets.”  The teams in the Mexican League have jerseys that say “Tigres” not “Los Tigres” so I’ll use that as my argument.

However, JMP threw out something very interesting in the comments yesterday:

I think that it was a reasonable level of protest for the Suns to wear their Los Suns jerseys last night, and I think that it would make sense for the Mets to use their Los Mets jerseys when playing the Diamondbacks as a quiet protest that wouldn’t disrupt the games. (I hate them as much as you do, but as a means of protest, I’d give them a pass.)

Before we get all political, Los Suns is even stupider than Los Mets.  I know that there’s a Spanish word for sun (“Sol”) and although I’m no Spanish expert I bet there’s a way to pluralize it.

However, we can argue that another time.

I also don’t want to debate politics, immigration, law, or any “hot-button” issues.  This is just a dopey blog written by a fat guy who has a man crush on Lee Mazzilli and wants the Mets to wear blue caps – let’s keep it that way and take the Arizona argument elsewhere.

What is interesting is JMP’s suggestion.

The Mets don’t play the Diamondbacks until July 19th but wouldn’t it be mighty interesting if they took the field in Los Mets jerseys.

I can’t figure out who decides what the team wears, but what if a few prominent players asked if they could wear Los Mets?

Of course, it would be the black road jersey which stupidly says Mets on a normal day, otherwise they’d have to make up some Nueva York jerseys (which makes sense and would actually be cool civilian wear).

Wouldn’t that be mighty interesting?  I bet it would get noticed.

Again, let’s keep this discussion to whether or not baseball should be political, this is not the forum for a political debate.

  1. As a hispanic, well a sort of hybrid being that we Puerto Ricans come with US citizenship factory installed, I wouldn’t be opposed to a little uniform protest. However I would prefer if the Jersey instead used the proper word “Metropolitanos” I know that’s a lot to use but perhaps we could take a cue from Arizonas and shorten it to M-Tanos. 😛

    1. I get the Metroplitanos argument, but the team is the Mets and has never been the Metropolitans (although they are the New York Metropolitan Base Ball Club).

I think a Nueva York road jersey would be neat.

Would the world end if they took the field at Citi with Nueva York? They took the field with 1901 N Y jerseys last year and even I didn’t complain.

  2. The whole uniform argument for most Mets fans has always been about context, or the lackthereof, for these alternates. If the team wears some sort of nod to its spanish-speaking fan base, that’s a heck of a lot of context and within it, a good reason for many to buy a jersey.

That said, I agree 100%, Los Mets is dumber than Yahoo’s Daily Fantasy Highlights (You mean I get to pay $10 for what’s free elsewhere, thanks Yahoo!). If you’re going to do it, do it right with either Nueva York or Metropolitanos. Then again, having seen the hot mess that is Mets marketing, I’m sure they’d go Los Metropolitanos and leave us back where we started.

You and me, Shannon, we’re kindred spirits.

  4. Also, they can wear Nueva York in Puerto Rico when they play the Marlins as the visiting team.

    1. @Ron I like that Puerto Rico idea.

The defense of black is “it sells.” I bet these would sell. I have no problem with real Spanish, it’s the dopey “Los Mets” that gets my goat.

  5. @Ron Los Metropolitanos would probably wrap around the back of the jersey.

I agree with everyone here. Nueva York is the way to go.

  6. i’m down with nueva york. or metropolitanos at home on fiesta latina night. i’m always a fan of the brewers and giants jerseys when they actually change the name. but the “los + [current wordmark]” looks dumb

  7. Putting aside the aesthetics/linguistic correctness of the term “Los Mets,” I think that a team that lionizes Jackie Robinson would be well-served to make a statement in Arizona against the racist law they just passed.

    1. Totally, 100% agree with Glenn – I posted a badge on atrainbaseball.com and I’d love Shannon to post it too. I hear Metgrrl’s gonna.

Personally, I dig Nueva York and would buy one tyo wear to the big Diamondback protest in late July.

  8. I would be willing to bet, black “NUEVA YORK” jerseys would sell. And, they could probably add a “Los” to the sleeve patch, that way marketing their losmets.com site. Win win.

Only problem may be fitting it on a jersey. The current “NEW YORK” Tuscan font would have to be reduced and placement adjusted to fit the new lettering on the jersey

And maybe (are you guys at the Mets reading this?) the “NUEVA YORK” option might be a great opportunity to float a blue jersey

  9. I would order a Nueva York jersey today if it was available. Of course I would also get stopped and asked for papers in Arizona too.

  10. here is the problem with the los mets thing, it just shows complete ignorance…it is kind of like an english speaking american trying to speak spanish and throwing el in front of a word and putting an o at the end of it kind of like el tabelo meaning a table.

i like the nueva york thing or metropolitanos, i am sure these teams and jersey makers can figure out a way to make this look good and make money on it. maybe not it is the mets we are talking about

    1. Nueva York jerseys got a pretty positive reaction here today. If I’m a marketer I would at least discuss it in the weekly meeting.

  11. Organizations (like the suns) shouldn’t impose their political opinions on their employees.

Also, since wednesday was cinco de mayo, i would think the suns were already planning on wearing those jerseys.

    1. No, it was a carefully planned protest of Arizona’s hate law – and the players (with a nobility rarely seen in pro sports) endorsed the plan entirely.

  12. I now plan to visit Arizona. Call it an anti boycott.

I know people who have waited to become citizens for years, worked hard and have earned it, but are still waiting. They are pissed at a system that allow people to steal services who don’t deserve them.

And for all those idiots who think it will lead to racial profiling, I have been stopped twice on I87 just south of Lake Placid (by US customs) for routine checks and have been asked for my license. Another time I was stopped at an airport on the jetway when leaving for Canada and had to produce my passport. I WAS LEAVING THE COUNTRY AND WAS STOPPED. STOP WITH THE COMPLAINTS OF PROFILING! THE LAW STATES THERE MUST BE CAUSE.

Good for Arizona. When Oklamhoma if they pass the same law. Good for the country.
