Link: SI on baseball’s marketing problem

As it is a quiet Tuesday so far, let’s take a look at this very good Sports Illustrated article.

In the article, Gary Vaynerchuk makes a great point.

You can’t find any baseball content on the internet unless the league is getting a piece of that through their accounts. Steph Curry was built on Instagram.”

Yep.  I have a kid who barely even knows what a TV looks like, and if you think he’s hanging out on MLB.com (or MetsPolice.com) you are crazy.

But the real money quote is here….

“If I were commissioner, I would be petrified that 6- to 14-year-olds in America consider Messi, Ronaldo, LeBron, Curry, and Ninja the Fortnite player more famous than any baseball player on earth.”

Amen amen amen. Amen.

I know some of you get mad at me when I write about baseball’s problems, and how BORING it is….but let me bring up (once again) the game I fell in love with, the game from the late 70s.  And I am aware I recently made this exact point.

Let’s take another look at some of the people in the 1977 All Star Game.

Johnny Bench?  Bigger than anyone playing now by a mile.

Pete Rose?  Superstar.

Mark Fidrych?  Have you seen the Big Bird cover?

Steve Garvey?  didn’t even make the hall but if you were a kid in 1977 you sure as hell knew who that was.

Now let’s throw out some names of some people who were on their way to the HOF, and to be fair there are people playing now that will make the Hall:  Brett, Carew, Fisk, Rice, Yaz, Palmer, Munson, Seaver, Carlton, Parker, Morgan, and Schmidt.  Holy cow.

Today’s baseball can’t touch that list.  Today’s NBA probably can.  And don’t underestimate the Ninja point that Gary made.  If you’re wondering who the hell Ninja is…I got news for you, time has passed you by, like it has done to baseball.
