‘Los Marlins’ are annoying to look at

JMP sent this in….

Shannon-
I know you hate the “Los Mets” jerseys with a passion, for completely justifiable reasons.

Of course, this week, the Mets and Marlins are playing a series in Puerto Rico. In honor of being in a Spanish-speaking locale, the Marlins are wearing their “Los Marlins” jerseys, which are (like the “Los Mets” jerseys) only problematic because the regular jerseys don’t say “The Marlins,” they just say “Marlins.” Of course, if the teams are going with a Spanish theme to honor the location of their series, why aren’t the Mets wearing road grey jerseys that say “Nueva York?”

I would think that those of us who object to “Los Mets” because of the inclusion of the definite article would have no problem with road grey jerseys that say “Nueva York,” and there would probably be significant merchandising potential for shirts like that. Moreover, it would guarantee that the Mets couldn’t wear black jerseys during this series.

Of course, the Mets as an organization tend not to do anything in such a well thought out manner…

For the newbies, I hate the look of the tiny Los and I hate the illogic of it.   Our team does not normally have a small THE above the team name, so adding a Los is just dumb.  I offer to use as evidence, the Mexican League.

A Nueva York road jersey would have been a cool move.   Perhaps next year.  Oh, and JMP I bet you it would be black.

View from Seattle on possible Lee to the Mets

Stumbled across this from a guy who covers the Mariners full-time.  I liked opening the article and seeing a picture of a Met (Thole)…seems like Thole and Pagan seems reasonable to the Seattle writer.

Is there another Angel Pagan that plays when I’m on vacation?  He’s been nice and all but let’s not get carried away.  .302 4 and 35.   I’ll try my luck with Cliff Lee and this guy Beltran I keep hearing about.

If the Mariners will make that deal make it now.   As we have learned championships are hard to come by, there may be one sitting on the table for the taking.

Also factor in SNY ratings, ticket sales and merchandise.  Cliff Lee gives the Mets a lot of additional income for the summer.

Maybe Thole makes the Hall of Fame and some fat guy on his deck will talk about what a stupid trade it was back in 2010, but today if I can get a Cliff Lee to make a shaky Santana a #3 (that’s if you believe Santana is shaky) you gotta look at this don’t you?

Wow, this post actually talked about baseball.

Megdal for GM on ‘Better Seats, Lower Prices’ (and some Mazzilli)

Howard Megdal who is running for Mets General Manager has a theory on the campaign, and how he will change it if he is elected as GM.  Under my Honor Among Bloggers code, it would not be cool to tell you what he came up with so you’ll have to read it here.

Medgal and I exchanged some tweets last week.   I have publicly stated that I don’t know if I can support this guy if he is going to wear black t-shirts in his ad campaigns.

If I do choose to support him, I have some terms:

1.  No black uniforms. Megdal will say the GM has no say over that.

The starting pitcher chooses the uniform.  The GM picks the roster.  Pick guys that hate black uniforms.  Very simple.

2.  Lee Mazzilli Poster Day II.

The first 25,000 people in attendance get a replica of the original Lee Mazzilli poster.  If you’re old enough you’ll dg it, if you are too young you will throw it away and I will just pick yours out of the garbage.

I need a Lee Mazzilli poster.  I can’t even find an image to share with you.  If you Google “Lee Mazzilli Poster” all you get is some idiot calling himself Mets Police talking about the poster.

I did find this cool article from New York Magazine in 1980 as I hunted.  Check out the Lee article on Page 10 called Urban Centerfielder.   Lee was the MAN in Flushing for a brief time.  Great article – I didn’t know Lee loves (loved?) Space Invaders.  I love Space Invaders.  Man, imagine me and Lee at an arcade with a roll of quarters in my pocket (made you laugh).   Also, what’s with this Joe Torre guy moving Lee to first base?  That guy stinks as a manager.

Oh yeah, I digress….Megdal for GM
