Obligatory Bobby V and Joe Torre article

The laws of blogging require that I write about both Bobby V and Joe Torre today.

Let’s knock Torre out first. Blah blah “core four” Jeter quote, Pettitte quote etc.

I remember Mets manager Joe Torre. I thought he was terrible. I was also in my single digits. All I knew was that the Mets stunk and he was the manager. So I was happy when he got fired, and surely this George Bamberger fellow would give me what I wanted.

I’m not going to waste a paragraph on telling you he was good with the Yankees. You were here and lived through it. I will quickly add that where he is underrated by those who underrate him is that he handled the media well. There was rarely chaos in the Bronx during those years, and if you lived the 20 years before that you know that the Bronx Zoo made the 2009 Mets circus look like a tightly run ship.

Then there is Bobby V, the king of finishing second. You can look it up. Nobody almost wins better than Bobby.

Bobby will get the Marlins to 90+ wins. Bobby will maximize a frugal budget. Bobby will get in the heads of certain other organizations in his division.

As a Mets fan you should be afraid of Bobby. He will be winning Wild Cards. He also won’t be managing the 2011 Mets (although it would be rude to get rid of Jerry Manuel, winner of the 2010 World Series anyway).

I still think the Phillies are solid, the Braves have it together and the Nats have like 5 players on their roster that could start for my team any day.

This is an interesting division, so far it has been a fun summer.

Pictures of Mets at an animal shelter

Who likes dogs more than I do?  Nobody.  I think I like dogs even more than I like the Mets.   Combine the two and…

Yesterday, Jeff Francoeur, Mike Pelfrey and Francisco Rodriguez took care of cats and dogs up for adoption at a midtown Manhattan animal shelter in support of Mayor Bloomberg’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals, a coalition of more than160 animal rescue groups and shelters to end the killing of healthy and treatable cats and dogs.

The Mets have been doing community service all week, and I will be sharing more pictures (once I get some quality deck and blogging time.  This “real job” thing is killing me on the blogging.)

TEAMMATES IN THE COMMUNITY WEEK: The Mets will continue to celebrate Teammates in the Community Week today when Mets General Manager Omar Minaya, Chris Carter and Alex Cora will visit a park in Queens to paint a playground and hold a baseball clinic for local Little Leaguers who have devoted their time to improving their park…The project is organized by the City ParksFoundation, which operates in more than 750 parks around the city to present a broad range of free arts, sports and educational programs, and empowers citizens to support their parks on a local level.

Blue and Orange in Hollywood Marketing

I was reading the latest Entertainment Weekly (waiting for the inevitable picture of Tina Fey, must she be in every single issue ever?) and stumbled across an article called Color Scheming:

“Orange and Blue are complimentary colors, so just by nature they give you that jolt that you need,’ says veteran movie adman Charles Riemers…

The article shows some blue and orange posters for The Bourne Identity, Transformers, Iron Man 2 and others.

So that got me thinking.

Say I owned a baseball team and I wanted to market it.   Maybe it is the 50th season of my franchise playing baseball and I want to really pull out all the stops for 2011.

Maybe a nice marketing campaign with this powerful color combination.   I could see some subway ads with say David Wright,Jose Reyes, Ike Davis, Johan Santana and Mike Pelfrey…or Seaver, Hernandez and Piazza…..all with a nice blue and orange color scheme.  (You photoshop guys, start working out some concepts for me to present to Dave).

What’s great is that this campaign would echo and build upon 2010’s “We believe in Orange and Blue.”  It is consistent and on-brand.   We do believe in Orange and Blue don’t we?

Then there’s a desire to sell product.   Say, new jerseys.

A 50th season would give me a great reason to add a patch to your sleeve.

Maybe a nice white jersey with the traditional blue and orange lettering, with NO BLACK DROPSHADOW….Jeff, that was NO BLACK DROPSHADOW would sell.

They got it right the first time.   1962-2011 is the perfect excuse to go back.

Help me Howie Rose, you’re our only hope.
