Should the Wilpons ‘shut up?’: I say no

I really don’t agree with this article in the Long Island Press:

The Wilpons, strangely, have decided it prudent to become pen pals with their fans as their search for the Mets’ next general manager trudges on, keeping the doting public abreast of who is in and who is not via e-mail blast. Surely this is the brain child of the latest in a long line of public-relations geniuses to have graced the offices of first Shea Stadium and now Citi Field.

This is nutty.  I like the increased communication from the Mets.  It’s good that they use twitter, emails, the Flushing Flash, even (selfishly) having the bloggers over for dinner.

We Mets fans are a tribe, and it’s nice to hear from Jeff.  I doubt he took hours out the GM search to write the email.  Perhaps someone wrote it for him (I have no problem with that), maybe Jeff wrote it himself.

Dialogue is good.   Public relations are good.   I hope Jeff sends out another email today. @aaguero9 pointed out on twitter that Jeff has stopped communicating to us, yet every beat reporter has the unannounced Sandy news.

I like to know what’s going on, and I like to hear it straight from the COO.

Will we Mets fans give Sandy time?

It took a guy like Cashen 4 or 5 years!

The question is are you willing to wait that long?

I’m glad we got a great GM. I think he is the right choice.
We got what we wanted here in Bloggerland but are you guys now prepared to stay the course and give him the time that is needed to rebuild the franchise?

Or are you all going to go back to headhunting the FO because you haven’t won anything in 20+ years and you want immediate gratification now despite the fact that trying to appease that immediate gratification is what screwed the franchise up in the first place?

I can only speak for myself.  I’m a fan.  I act like a fan.  I write from a fan’s point of view.

I know that Sandy needs time.  I hope that the franchise has long term success and becomes the most awesomest franchise in sports (the point of this blog is to encoorage that).

However, am I gonna complain when they start one and five?  Yep.

Am I gonna complain that Bob Melvin is boring?  Yep.

Will ticket prices be too high and the cost of beer outrageous?  Yep.

I think the 2011 expectation is different than 2007-2010.   I think we’re looking more at a 1983-84 situation.   `Show some progress and this fan will wait.  Yeah I’m a curmudgeon.

I’ve waited 24 years, I will wait 24 more.  But to lie to you and say I’ll be patiently writing posts about how awesome 2016 will be?  Not gonna happen.

Sandy’s best move would be to never read a paper, a blog, twitter or listen to the radio.  Dave Howard can do all those things as he figures out how to get fannies in the seats – leave the on-field to Sandy.

Not sure any of that made sense…discuss!

A New Yorker explains why he still roots for the San Francisco Giants – ESPN New York

From the other day…cool stuff about the Formerlys.   I guess in about 10 years we’ll feel the same way about the Mercury Mets.

Four short years later, the Giants moved 3,000 miles away and my father and I were stuck listening to Les Keiter’s recreations of the games on WINS, punctuated by amateurish radio sound effects and blatant exaggeration (no fly ball failed to get to the warning track).

Do you think Howie will move to Mercury or stay behind to do recreations?

I think Fran Healy would be a great choice for the Mercs, and Howie could do recreations.  Or maybe Howie could just translate Yankee games from Sterlingese.

In all seriousness it must have been odd in 1962 to see the old team play in “their’ ballpark against another team with “their” logo on the caps.

Mazzilli for Mets manager still out there?

Good morning Mets fans,

To my surprise I continue to see Lee Mazzilli on the meaningless speculation lists. Adam Rubin has Lee on his, I believe Joel Sherman does not. The only list that matters is Sandy’s, but it looks like Sandy is setting himself up to catch fan grief from the get go.

Now, Sandy should be thinking long term and not listening to fat guys typing on a bus but when “Bob Melvin” or “Ken Oberkfell” gets announced, be ready for a flurry of cranky Mets fans.

I guess it goes back to Bonds, but I always associate the Giants with “gold” tickets. I don’t suppose I can convince the Mets to stop with that system.

I also was thinking about my Saturday seats and how I’d rather not get stuck with 5 Tuesdays. The smart thing in that case would to be to drop from 15 to zero, and then buy on the cheap from Stubhub suckers. Please, for your sake and mine just sell “Saturday plans” that only take place on Saturday. You already lost an entire generation to the Bronx, don’t lose another.

Do you think Jeff or Dave or even Uncle Saul sat down to watch the World Series (assuming they don’t have Cablevision) and noticed how sharp the Giants uniforms look? The font is fantastic (Mets script at home is nice but our road font is great), there is no clutter and fans seem able to identify the players without a name on the back.

Take the stupid dropshadow off the pinless, take the names off too and there could be something nice looking in Queens.

Let’s combine everything: imagine Lee Mazzilli’s Mets win the World Series while dressed nicely? There would be nothing to write about and I could go back to watching Star Trek reruns. No more blogging! Some day….
