New York Mets blood drive

From this morning’s Flushing Flash, three things of interest

1.  A video of Doc & Darryl, but as I have previously observed, MLB might go out of business if I were able to embed a video.

2.  Goodness:

Mets Blood Drive
The Mets will be hosting their annual Winter Blood Drive for the New York Blood Center this Wednesday, January 27, in Citi Field’s Caesars Club from 10 am to 5 pm (First Base VIP Entrance). Donors must be 17 years of age (16 with parental permission), weigh at least 110 lbs and be in good health. Each donor will receive a pair of tickets to a select Mets game in April. Bring ID with photo or signature. Call 1-800-933-BLOOD for more information.

3.  Mets interestingly are being clear about the Hall of Fame Sunday ticket plan thing:

Want to see the induction ceremony in person? Guarantee your seats now to the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Sunday, August 1, with either the Weekend Plus Plan or the 40 Game Plan A.

Again, if you bought a Sunday Plus plan and expected to have this game in your package…sorry.

Brooklyn Cyclones Contest: Youniform fan desined unis

An interesting promotion, considering how uniform obsessed we are around these parts, the Cyclones are running a contest to let one young fan (age 5-16) design a uniform that will be worn in a game.

Fun promotion.  I fear what would happen if they tried this at the major league level unless the judges were me, Howie Rose and Paul Lukas from Uni Watch.

My holiday gift from the Mets arrived on January 19th

I don;t know what to make of this one.  I got some mail from the Mets yesterday, so I was pleased.

They sent me this cool framed photo.  It looks much better in real  life, I knocked it out quickly on the iphone (Mrs. Mets Police was looking to hang out last night).

Also in the package was this letter (yes I’m a jerk and took a sideways photo and am not smart enough to rotate in 90 degrees).  Tilt your head.

Happy Holidays?  This arrived on January 19th.

Last week, Media Goon told me that he got the same package.   I had been holding off on writing about it (and a bunch of other stuff like “5 greatest Mets”, Jay Horwitz, and photos from the fan gatherings) because I am waiting for the behind the scenes webstuff that I’ve been mentioning to take hold, but now that I got the package too I bet many Mets fans have.

Clearly this was designed as an end of year gift.

Theories:
1.  The mail service stinks.  The Mets sent this out weeks and weeks ago and the postal service let them down and now my poor Mets look foolish.

2.  These were designed as gifts for season ticket renewers, maybe even just full, and now they have extras so they are making their way down the list.  Under my theory, ticket sales are down that they’ve gone through the “active” list and are now working on the “recent” list.  Media Goon is active, I am not.

Who knows, but I thought it was odd.  Regardless, I like the photo.

Speaking of tickets – the football Giants called my kid again to see if he wants tickets.  I had put his name on the list the day after the NYG’s won the Super Bowl.   I missed the call, but it’s interesting to me that they are taking another run at him.   The Jets are due to flirt with us again, they have done so six times and we’re not even on their list.

Mets Hall of Fame day is not in the Sunday Plus Plan

I am going to throw something.

Media Goon just correctly pointed out that August 1st, the day the Mets will honor Doc, Straw, Cashen and Davey is not in the Sunday Plus plan.

So you’re a big Mets fan, you pre-pay the Mets for 15 games in a “Sunday Plus” plan, and then they add a really cool event on one of the Sundays they left out.

That’s the kind of annoying stuff that costs you long term customers.

The game is part of the weekend plus plan.  I bet many Sunday-plus plan owners will be quite surprised when they go to grab their tickets and find that they don’t have one.

As I’ve said before, they need a fan-consultant.  Run this stuff by someone.  You’ll hear grumblings about this in July once people look closely and their packages.

Thoughts about the Mets Hall of Fame announcement

Since Metsblog did a great job recapping what was said on the call, rather than type for typing sake I’ll send you over there…but since it’s right up my alley I want to comment.

I love that the Mets are having a ceremony on August 1st.  For me, that’s now a hot ticket.

The quotes Matt has from both Doc & Darryl about their regrets on their Met careers are priceless.  Straw is right that the biggest mistake he made was leaving the Mets.  Well, maybe not the biggest, he’s had some personal demons, but for purposes of Mets Policing, it sucked when he talked for years about how he couldn’t wait to be a Dodger, and then followed suit.

I don’t think you yougins can ever quite grasp how good Gooden was there at the start.  He was absolutely on his way to the Hall of Fame.  The Daily News one time ran a faux-future article about Doc’s 300th win (with career recaps).  If anyone has that or can find it online, that would be gold.  (Hey Bitter Bill, can you go down the hall and look in some archive?).  That he finished with under 200 wins is amazing.  He had 60 and 21 years old.

Cashen is a name you don’t hear these days, and placing him in the Hall and having a prominent hall and museum is a good way for Mets fans to know about names like that.   That’s why I’ve been harping on this stuff since I started this site.  You can’t expect some 15 year old Mets fan to know about these guys unless you tell them.  It looks like the Mets are doing a good job on this.

Today’s a good day in Flushing.

(still waiting for new blog host to take control of the site.  This process is as slow as Sid Fernandez pitching the second game of a doubleheader.   This is another reminder that the site might go down/look weird/look stupid for anywhere between two seconds and several hours depending on when they do it and how close I am to a computer when they do.)
