Mets shouldn’t rule out trading promising youngsters – NYPOST.com

We’ve talked about this in the past – both on the site and the podcast.  This franchise should consider everyone as on the table.  I like Ike and I love home grown players, but Joel Sherman makes a lot of sense here:

Before the position has way more supply than demand, the Mets should, at the least, see if Davis can return a long-term rotation piece, second baseman or potential replacement to Reyes (a free agent after next year). The Mets could then stopgap for 2011 with a free agent such as Lyle Overbay, Carlos Pena, Adam LaRoche or Derrek Lee — all of whom would offer similar production to Davis. And then — thinking big picture — the Mets should be predetermined to solve first base long-term after the 2011 campaign with a true difference-making free agent from among Albert Pujols, Prince Fielder and Adrian Gonzalez.

To bring winning back to Queens, Mets should hire… Lee Mazzilli? (News)

Good morning Mets fans.  Apparently I am now writing in the Daily News using the psuedonym “Bill Madden.”  I swear there are days I don’t even know who I am.

So, if not Backman, there is only one other candidate who fills at least two of the three primary criteria the Wilpons are looking for – difference-maker, experience, Met pedigree – and that’s Lee Mazzilli, who, coincidentally, is also employed by the Yankees in a behind-the-scenes capacity. Mazzilli, one of the most popular Mets ever, managed the Baltimore Orioles for a year and a half in 2004-05 and might have been a difference-maker there if not constrained by the manic, deterrent ownership of Peter Angelos. Mazzilli’s 78-84 third-place finish In 2004, is the O’s best record since 1999. The following year, he had them a half-game out of first place as late as July 18 – only to be fired by Angelos two weeks later in the wake of Rafael Palmeiro’s positive steroids test.

Yep, you have now lived long enough to see a non-kook suggest Lee Mazzilli be the next manager of the Mets.  Man, even I have given up that dream.
