Sandy Answers Our Tweeted Questions

Is Sandy Alderson reading Mets Police?

(Hi Sandy – loved the tie today)

Yesterday afternoon prior to the press conference the Mets tweeted:

What do you want to ask Sandy? Send us your questions and we’ll pick a few for Sandy to answer today

I know a lot of people responded, including yours truly as well as Shannon.  Tonight, the Mets sent out an email with a video link of Sandy answering selected questions tweeted by fans.

He answered 3 questions – 2 of them were ours

You can see the full video here, but let’s look at the questions we submitted

My question to Sandy – Do you feel that there are any untouchable players in the organization should the opportunity for a trade present itself?

Hi response was basically no.  There are players whose cost would be very high, others that they would not shop, and core “fan favorites” – “but in terns of having truly untouchables, the answer is we don’t have any”

Shannon’s question was the final one – I would like to know if you would consider winning the NL but not the World Series to be a successful year?

Shannon must be doing cartwheels over this answer – “…it would be foolish not to acknowledge that there had been something accomplished, but ultimately that’s not the goal, and from personal experience, nobody’s happy going home number 2”

What can we get from this?  I think a lot.  Nobody is untouchable – so if the right deal presents itself that makes baseball sense, he will do it (and I believe he’s got the cajones to pull it off too).  But most importantly, a competitive team is not the goal – winning the World Series is the goal.

And just in case Sandy really does read Mets Police – Sandy, Day 1 was good and you made at least me smile.  I’m looking forward to Day 2.

Incorrect info on new 1986 World Series fan brick at Citi Field

Here’s the fanbrick which says Sid Fernandez earned the win in Game 7.

And here is the Mets pitching boxscore of Game 7.

New York Mets IP H R ER BB SO
Darling 3.2 6 3 3 1 0
Fernandez 2.1 0 0 0 1 4
McDowell W (1-0) 1.0 3 2 2 0 1
Orosco SV (2) 2.0 0 0 0 0 2

and a second source just to make sure we’re not all insane.

Hopefully the Mets can fix this one lest we misinform our children.

Since there’s a lot of new visitors today (thank you Mets Blog) I am going to shamelessly encourage you to sign up for the free daily Mets Police email. Also visit the main page for more pictures of the modifications to Citi Field and here’s some more pictures of other historical bricks.

UPDATE: this post has been drawing a lot of attention.   The Mets have since removed the brick and a correct version will replace it.   Great job by the Mets on fixing this one quickly.  Read more in the Times.

The Royals Love The Yankees

OK, so maybe they don’t really love the Yankees per se, but the Royals – and the rest of the teams in MLB – have got to really love one aspect of the Yankees winning – it means more money for every team.

Literally within 10 minutes of the final out, MLB blasted an email touting 2009 World Series Championship gear. Since this first email, I have also received emails about World Series Pins and a special Sports Illustrated package.

Why does this make the Twins happy? Because of an agreement that Bud Selig negotiated with all the owners almost 10 years ago. MLB doesn’t have full revenue sharing. However, when it comes to any online activity – and that includes all online shopping – the proceeds are divided evenly among all teams.

The Yankees are the most marketed and marketable franchise in baseball. A Yankees WS Champion tee will sell far more than a Phillies one would have, let along the Twins for example.

So…Yankees win… sells more merchandise……Oakland gets a bigger check.

Ticker Tape Parade on Friday at 11 am

According to Fox 5 NY the city will host a ticker tape parade for the Yankees on Friday morning at 11 am.

As is the tradition, the parade will move up Broadway – the Canyon of Heroes – from Battery Park to City Hall, where Mayor Bloomberg will welcome the team.

Congratulations Yankees

Yes I am a Mets fan.

And yes I root against the Yankees.

However I will also give credit where credit is due. The Yankees had a hell of a year and as a baseball fan first and foremost I will congratulate the winners of the World Series.

That said, this off-season just got that much worse.
